Cool girl who was doing some fingerpainting.

This After School Program explores the energy in Light, Sound, Electricity, and more.  Students learn how they interpret, or even mis-interpret, the world around them.  They then use some of their own energy to explore the science of heat!  This is a program of hands-on activities, stunning demonstrations, and inquiry-based discussions.

General Information
  • Watts-Up: Children discover the world of electricity. They will see sparks fly from a Van De Graaf generator. Children watch feathers levitate in a static field. They experiment at home with static generators.
  • Optical Illusions: Children explore the physics of optical illusions. They learn how our eyes can trick our brains as a twisting coil moves in mysterious ways, and a towel turns into a dog! Children will work with mirrors and explore the world with inverted vision. Children will create their own convex lens using water and a washer.
  • Lights ... Color... Action! Children observe demonstrations that blend colors to produce white light, and others that separate white light into colors. A chromatography activity from white light to the ultraviolet range. Children look at the world through tinted lenses to experience colorblindness and see through the eyes of animals.
  • Sonic Sounds: Discover sound, sound waves and the way household items can be used to create amazing movie effects. Use our multi-effects processor to alter your voice with lots of cool special effects.
  • Mission: Nutrition: Children focus on nutrition and fitness, including the essential components of a healthy diet and lifestyle. They observe experiments to improve their understanding of how food fuels our bodies. An experiment with emulsions shows them how bile helps us digest fats.
  • Harnessing Heat: Learn about the concepts of heat and heat transfer. Witness the practical side of heat-sensitivity; thermal paper browns under the forces of a heat gun and ice cubes melt on a heat transfer block. Children participate in a tactile temperature test demonstrating how relative temperatures confuse their brains.
  • Materials needed for each class will be emailed one week in advance. Most materials are items you already have in your household. For an example please click on the attachment to see materials needed for week 1.
  • Location: Virtual At-home class via Zoom
  • 6 weeks
